Acts of Kindness

Sometimes I think about how much nicer a place the world world be if we all slowed downIf we took our headphones out of our ears, if we put our phones in our pockets and looked up, if we realized that we didn’t, actually, need to send that email right now, while also eating breakfast and trying to catch the train.

I am guilty of doing all of these. Of rushing, stressing, and ignoring. What if instead, we looked people in the eye, appreciated our surroundings, and placed our energy solely on the task at hand? If instead of rushing to work, we viewed our commutes as a time for ourselves, to recharge, refocus, and recommit?

As cliche as it is, I truly believe it is the smallest of gestures that can bring the most joy to one’s life, not only our own but someone else’s as well. If fact, reaching out to others is almost a surefire way to raise your own mood (it’s been proven). With a bit of effort and awareness for those and that around us, imagine the rewards we can all reap? Here are some simple ideas…

Pay for the coffee or tab of the person behind you.
Give a larger-than-normal tip.
Hold the door open for someone (it blows my mind how many people do not even look to see if there is someone behind them).
Donate books, clothes, and your time.
Leave an anonymous note in a public place.
Surprise a friend with a card/gift/visit.
Leave your already-read magazines at the gym.
Mentor a child.
Let that car or person go in front of you.
Smile more; you will naturally exude warmth and comfort.

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. Ghandi.
